Parent-Child Workshops

Few parents would hesitate to attend a celebration!

For this reason, Celebration of Letters are less like workshops and more like parties with a purpose! The Busy Preschooler's Guide to Learning includes guidelines for 13 parent-child workshops called Celebration of Letters. Each workshop focuses on two letters of the alphabet. More festive and less formal than typical parent-child sessions, complete guides for each workshop are online.
Each Celebration of Letters workshop includes both parent-child activities and group-structured participation.

In addition, each Celebration of Letters workshop guide offers suggestions for:

  • Inexpensive decorations and visuals that support the theme letters
  • Short activities involving simple props that reinforce the theme letters
  • Tips and insights that guide parents to recognize and utilize the learning opportunities presented by everyday living
  • Template invitations to use when inviting parents to your Celebration of Letters workshops! Invitations are in both English and Spanish.

In a party-like setting, parents experience that their child's learning involves everyday scenarios in which they are the central participant — their child's primary educator. Workshops are informal structured learning — designed more like learning centers than a formal classroom. Activities teach parents to recognize their child's learning opportunities in everyday life and how they, the Parent Educator, can educate using principles rather than specific lessons.

Each workshop guide suggests a Read-Aloud Story Time* using a title from the Interactive Book-Webscene series, KA Readers. In addition to online animations that enhance the listening experience, included are brief age-appropriate lessons for each title. Lessons include pre-read script, phonemic awareness and phonics practice, post-read discussion script, comprehension questions, vocabulary building webscene exploration script.

Busy Preschooler's Guide to Learning activities and online animations serve as the foundation of each workshop. The activities that serve to introduce each workshop's letters are also contained in the series of books, Celebration of Letters.

Here's why we suggest you consider purchase of titles from the Celebration of Letters book series to use with your parent participants:

  • These books provide the parent with a hands-on teaching resource to use with their child at home.
  • For parents who are Spanish-only speakers or English Language Learners, each Celebration of Letters book contains English and Spanish versions of each activity.
  • All online activities contain parent-child interaction instruction in both English and Spanish.

* KA Reader titles require additional purchase.
